The Great Glaze Combination Clay Experiment
Posted on September 25 2026,
When I first set out to test some of the most common clay bodies, I had no idea how deep I would get sucked into this project. Unlike glaze testing, where you take a small test tile, dip it into your glaze, and stick it into the kiln, a combination requires more surface area. Rather than making extra-large test tiles, I decided to throw small pots, similar in shape to many of my other pieces. This would allow me to get an outcome similar to that of a mug or bowl.

Now, what I didn't realize was that I'd be throwing hundreds of these little pots! I can say, I've gotten pretty good at throwing this shape over the last two months. Nearly all of these little pots have been bisque fired and are not ready to be glazed.
I will be hosting a Glaze Workshop on October 4, 2026, which will demonstrate the Galaxy Glaze Combination, and then shortly after, we will fire many of these little tester pots and take a peek at our results. If you'd like to receive a breakdown of the results, and continued access to updates, you can join the Mini Mug club ($1), or access it on Mud Society. I will post the link for that once it's finished and uploaded. The $1 membership will help me to continue offering educational content and free project mugs.
I'll also be selling our test pots to help me offset the materials/glaze used in this project. They won't be much, likely $10-$20, at least for the ones that turn out!
